A short time line to highlight the troubles and scandals of John Terry which have been scooped up to create a media frenzy over the past ten years. We all know that the football superstar can score goals for his team, (currently Chelsea FC) but what has been going on in his personal life. I took the liberty of doing some research on my most trusted news sites The Guardian and The Times to find out how his performance off the pitch and in the media spotlight have led to his de-captaincy earlier this year.

Doing what he does best

2001– Terry, along with four other Chelsea team mates – Frank Lampard, Eidur Gudjohnsen and Jody Morris were deducted two weeks’ wages after their behaviour at a Heathrow hotel is criticised as insensitive on the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.

2002 – because of an alleged incident in a London nightclub, Terry and one of the same team mates Morris were charged with assault and affray. Unfortunately, this was around the time of the World Cup and the Football Association decided he should not be considered for international duty with England until the legal case was completed. Both players were later cleared but they were also fined for being out late less than 48 hours before an important match.

2004 – The player was heavily Penalised for a foul on Portugal goalkeeper Ricardo, denying Sol Campbell a winner in the European Championship quarter-final. However, this was also the year that Terry was appointed as the Chelsea Captain.

2006 – He was charged with improper conduct by the Football Association for comments about referee Graham Poll. Later the midfielder admits the charge and is reprimanded and fined £10,000. Overall, this was his only hiccup as this was the year that John Terry replaced David Beckham as the England team Captain.

2007 – Terry was scandal free at this time, instead he was encountering an array of injuries on the pitch. These fatalities include a broken foot, broken cheekbone and surgery on his knee as well as being knocked unconscious during the Carling Cup final when he was kicked in the head. Ouch!

2009 – John Terry’s mother Sue, was cautioned by police for shoplifting along with his mother-in-law, Sue Poole. On top of this, later in the year, Terry’s father Ted was accused of passing illegal drugs to an undercover newspaper reporter.

2010 – Terry was named as the sportsman behind a gagging injunction involving his private life. His identity was revealed after the news broke of an alleged relationship between married Terry and the former girlfriend of his ex-team-mate Wayne Bridge. The scandal affected a lot of people on and off the pitch and although he and his wife Toni have managed to stay together, it has cost him his position as the England team Captain.
